Pujya Sri Swamiji’s message for Bhakti TV on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri
Aum Namah Shivaya
aṇoraṇīyān aham eva tatvat
mahānaham vishvam aham vishuddhah
purātanoham purushōham īshō
hiraṇmayoham shiva rūpam asmi
I am smaller than an atom and greater than the greatest. I am this entire Universe. I am Vishuddha - pure. I am purātana Purusha - the ancient and supreme being. I am Ishvara! I am Hiraṇmaya - of golden hue. I am the embodiment of Shiva! As you keep chanting and contemplating thus, you shall become Shiva! This is the essence of meditation. As we think, so we become. This is a blessing bestowed by Shiva Himself on Shivaratri. This is why the great masters said one Shivaratri is enough to attain salvation. There is no greater dhyana than to contemplate thus on Shivaratri.
This most important Shivaratri has arrived. Therefore, worship Lord Shiva with the utmost devotion and sincerity. Use this day to become one with Lord Shiva. Since it is very important to stay awake, those who are healthy should stay awake all night contemplating on Lord Shiva. While chanting Shiva’s name, offer worship and abhisheka to the Lord, and make the best use of the time of Lingodbhava. On the following day, after worshipping the Lord, complete the Shivaratri vrata.
It is very good to offer Rudrabhisheka on Shivaratri. By the grace of Mrityunjaya, one shall attain longevity, and be rid of the fear of death. This Shivaratri which uplifts us comes only once a year and blesses us with untold boons. Therefore without wasting even a second, one should spend the entire day worshipping and contemplating on Lord Shiva. Without fail, you must follow the instructs of the great sages who only care for our well-being. Shivaratri is different from all other festivals. Out of great compassion for us, Lord Shiva has bestowed this day on us to not only bless us not just with boons, but liberation as well.
There is a reason why Lord Shiva took this avatara during this Magha month which falls in the cold winter time. Most of the strange and unknown diseases surface during winter and spread very quickly, thus troubling the entire world. Shiva therefore took Avatara in this time to protect people with good health, happiness and peace and not allow these diseases to torment the world. One should therefore worship Mrityunjaya to be free from all worldly diseases and ailments.
mrityunjayāya rudrāya neelakanṭhāya shambhavē
amrutēshāya sharvāya mahādēvāya tē namaha
Shiva rids the world of the sorrows arising from samsara. He also rids one of the sorrows arising from birth, death, disease and old age. Those who wish to attain success in their endeavours and fulfil their wishes, must hold onto Lord Shiva, who is verily auspiciousness. He constantly bestows auspiciousness and good fortune; and protects night and day, the seasons, flowering creepers and fruit-bearing trees for our sake. Since Nature remains cool and flourishes under His protection, those who seek prosperity must worship Lord Shiva. Since chanting Shiva Nama bestows merit, Shankara Bhagavad Padacharya praised the Lord as 'Samsara Gahana Taraka Murti’ - the One who takes us across this impenetrable cycle of mundane existence.
There is a reason why all the homage paid to Lord Shiva bears fruit on this day. On all other days, the moon influences and effects the mind, causing restlessness and the inability to restrain it. But on Shivaratri, the moon exerts very little influence on the mind, thus making it easy to restrain the mind. Thus when the mind contemplates on Lord Shiva, one attains great merits. Sometimes, the mind merges in Shiva and becomes one with Him. Therefore all of you must make the best use of this festival.
The scriptures say that offering abhisheka to the lord and worshipping Him with Bilva leaves, grants Shakti, Bhakti and Mukti. Shiva is light, He is without name or form. The Lord appeared in the form of a Linga to uplift the world. This form not only seems strange but astonishing too, since the Lord is always covered in sacred ash. Instead of wearing jewels, He wears snakes around His neck. Elephant hide is the garment which He wraps around His body. He has three eyes, wears the moon on His head and one of His wives resides atop His head. He has given half His body to the other wife and appears as one who is devoid of all attachment to worldly matters. And what to say of His sons - Gajamukha and Shanmukha. One has an elephant head, while the other has six heads! His Vahana is a bull, and His residence is not a beautiful palace but the cremation grounds! Next to such a strange looking Lord is Annapurna Devi, and yet He roams from one home to another begging for alms! These are all actions which instil atma gnyana - the knowledge of Self in us. How can we go with our requests to one who himself is asking for alms? We must understand that the Lord with His form and being is teaching us a great lesson.
By smearing sacred ash all over His body, the Lord promises to bless us with auspiciousness. The elephant hide and snakes teach us dispassion, not to become obsessed with clothes and ornaments, whose very nature is impermanent. By begging for alms, He is only asking for our Bhakti. The Lord says, “if you are devout, I shall bless you with Liberation.” The two wives should ideally represent a large samsaric life, but Maha Kala - the Lord of Time who quelled Kama (desire) is teaching us to restrain our mind. As Lord Neelakantha who holds poison in His throat, the Lord teaches us to swallow our difficulties and help others.
Rise, fall, growth and dissipation are part of life, therefore one should not feel proud or become dejected. The moon atop the Lord’s head represents equanimity in all situations. Irrespective of whether one is rich or poor, ultimately everyone has to go Rudra bhoomi. In the hope that at least in their final hour, people would contemplate on Me, I reside in the cremation ground. If one holds onto My elephant-headed son, he shall free one from obstacles. By seeking refuge in the son with 6 faces, one shall attain gnyaana. By worshipping the Mother who occupies half my body, one shall gain shakti. Contemplating on the wife who resides on my head shall make one pure. By praying to my Vahana, Nandeeshwara shall bless one with the qualities which a devotee should have and teach the practices to be followed. My entire family stands as an ideal to uplift the entire world. If you understand this, I shall follow you everywhere and fulfil your desires.
Thus with His form, Lord Shiva teaches us that since the six senses (including the mind) have a great role to play, at least on Shivaratri, if one brings the senses to focus on Shiva, one shall gain immense benefits.
O Lord, please bless me so that these six senses - my mind, speech, hearing, hands, intellect and eyes are ever immersed in serving You!
Lord Shiva’s Grace shall fall on you and your life shall attain fulfillment. Let us all sing His praises.

マハー・シバラトリに際してのプジャ・スリ・スワミジのバクティTVへのメッセージです。
私は原子よりも小さく、最も偉大なものを凌ぐ偉大さです。私はこの宇宙全体です。私はヴィシュッダ（純粋）です。私はプラータナ・プルシャ（古代の至高の存在）です。私はイシュヴァラ（Ishvara）です。私はヒーランマヤ（黄金の色合い）です。私はシヴァの体現者である。このように唱え、熟考し続ければ、あなたはシヴァになるでしょう！これが瞑想の本質です。これは瞑想の本質です。私たちが考えるように、私たちはなるのです。これはシバラトリにシヴァ神ご自身が授けられた祝福です。偉大なマスターたちが、救いを得るには1回のシバラトリで十分だと言ったのはこのためです。シバラトリにこのように観想すること以上に素晴らしいディヤーナ（瞑想）はありません。
この最も重要なシバラトリがやってきました。ですから、最大限の献身と誠意を持ってシバ神を崇拝しなさい。この日を利用してシバ神と一体になりなさい。起きていることが非常に重要なので、健康な人は一晩中起きていてシバ神を思い浮かべるべきです。シバの名を唱えながら、主に礼拝とアビシェカを捧げ、リンゴッドバヴァの時間を有効に使いましょう。翌日、主を礼拝した後、シバラトリ・ヴラタを完成させなさい。
シバラトリにルドラビシェーカを捧げるのは非常に良いことです。ムリチュンジャヤの恩寵により、人は長寿を得、死の恐怖から解放されるでしょう。私たちを高揚させるこのシバラトリは年に一度だけ訪れ、数え切れないほどの恩恵で私たちを祝福してくれます。ですから、一秒たりとも無駄にすることなく、一日中シヴァ神を礼拝し、思索にふけらなければなりません。必ず、私たちの幸福だけを考えてくれる偉大な聖者たちの指示に従わなければなりません。シバラトリは他のすべての祭りと異なります。私たちに対する大きな慈悲から、シバ神はこの日を私たちに授け、私たちに恩恵だけでなく、解放も与えてくれました。
シヴァ神がこのアヴァターラを、寒い冬に当たるこのマーガ月に行ったのには理由がある。奇妙で未知の病気の多くは冬に表面化し、非常に急速に広がるため、全世界を悩ませています。そこでシヴァ神は、人々を健康、幸福、平安で守り、これらの病気が世界を苦しめるのを許さないために、この時期にアヴァターラを授けられたのです。したがって、人はすべての世俗的な病気や疾患から解放されるためにムリチュンジャヤを崇拝する必要があります。
シヴァは、輪廻から生じる悲しみを世界から取り除いてくれる。また、生、死、病気、老いから生じる悲しみも取り除いてくれます。努力の成功を得たい者、願いを叶えたい者は、まさに吉祥であるシヴァ神につかまらなければならない。彼は常に吉祥と幸運を授け、私たちのために昼夜、季節、花の咲く葎、実のなる木々を守っています。自然はシバの保護のもとで冷静さを保ち、繁栄しているので、繁栄を求める者はシバ神を崇拝しなければなりません。シヴァ・ナマを唱えると功徳が得られるので、シャンカラ バガヴァッド パダチャリヤは、主を「サムサラ ガハナ タラカ ムルティ」、つまりこの入り組んだ俗世の存在の循環を越えて連れて行ってくれる者として讃えています。
シヴァ神へのすべての敬意がこの日に実を結ぶのには理由がある。他のすべての日は、月が心に影響を与え、落ち着きをなくし、それを抑制することができなくなります。しかし、シバラトリの日には、月は心にほとんど影響を与えないので、心を抑制することが容易になります。このように、心がシバ神を思い浮かべるとき、人は大きな功徳を得る。時には、心はシヴァ神の中に溶け込み、彼と一体になります。ですから、皆さんはこの祭りを最大限に活用しなければなりません。
聖典によれば、主にアビシェーカ（崇拝神への沐浴）を捧げ、ビルバ（マルメロ、カリン）の葉で主を礼拝することで、シャクティ（力）、バクティ（信愛）、ムクティ（解放）が授けられると言われています。シヴァ神は光であり、名前も形もない。主は世界を高揚させるためにリンガの形で現れました。この形は奇妙に見えるだけでなく、主が常に神聖な灰で覆われていることから、驚くべきものでもあります。宝石を身につける代わりに、首には蛇を下げています。象の皮は、彼が体に巻き付ける衣服です。主は3つの目を持ち、頭に月を載せ、妻の一人が頭の上に乗っています。半身をもう一人の妻に譲り、世俗的なことに執着しないお方として現れています。そして、その息子であるガジャムカとシャンムカはどうでしょう。一人は象の頭で、もう一人は6つの頭を持っています。彼のヴァーハナは牛で、彼の住居は美しい宮殿ではなく、火葬場です。このような奇妙な姿の主の隣にはアンナプルナ・デーヴィがいるのに、彼は家から家へと歩き回って托鉢しているのです。これらはすべて、私たちにアートマ・ジニャーナ（自己の知識）を植え付けるための行動です。自分自身が施しを求めている人に、どうしてお願いをしに行くことができるでしょうか？主はその姿と存在で、私たちに大きな教訓を与えてくださっていることを理解しなければなりません。
聖なる灰を全身に塗ることで、主は私たちに吉祥の祝福を約束してくれているのです。象の皮と蛇は、無常である衣服や装飾品に執着しないように、私たちに冷静さを教えてくれます。施しを求めるということは、私たちのバクティを求めているに過ぎません。主は、「もしあなたが敬虔であるなら、私はあなたに解放を祝福しよう」とおっしゃっています。二人の妻は、理想的には大きな輪廻の人生を表すべきですが、カーマ（欲望）を鎮めた時の主であるマハーカーラは、私たちの心を抑制することを教えてくれています。毒を喉に抱えるニーラカンタ神のように、困難を飲み込んで人を助けることを教えているのです。
栄枯盛衰、成長、消滅は人生の一部であり、それゆえ人は慢心したり、落ち込んだりしてはならないのです。主の頭の上にある月は、どんな状況でも平静であることを表しています。富める者も貧しい者も、最終的には誰もがルドラ・ブーミ（ルドラの世界）に行かなければなりません。少なくとも最後の時に、人々が私を観想してくれることを願って、私は火葬場に住んでいるのです。もし、人が私の象の頭をした息子を抱きしめるなら、彼は人を障害から解放するでしょう。6つの顔を持つ息子に帰依することで、人はジニャーナ（智慧）に到達する。私の体の半分を占める母を崇拝することによって、人はシャクティ（女神の力）を得るだろう。私の頭の上にいる妻に思いを馳せることで、人は清らかになる。私のヴァハナに祈ることで、ナンデーシュワラは帰依者が持つべき資質を祝福し、従うべき修行を教えてくれるでしょう。私の家族全体は、全世界を向上させる理想的な存在です。もしあなたがこのことを理解するならば、私はどこまでもあなたについていき、あなたの望みを叶えよう。
このように、シバ神はその姿と共に、（マインドを含む）六つの感覚が大きな役割を担っているので、少なくともシバラトリでは、感覚をシバ神に集中させれば、人は計り知れない利益を得ることができると教えているのです。
主よ、私の心、言葉、聴覚、手、知性、目という六つの感覚が、常にあなたに仕えることに没頭できるよう、私を祝福してください。
シバ神の恩寵があなたの上に降り注ぎ、あなたの人生は充実したものになるでしょう。みんなでシヴァ神の賛美を歌いましょう。
